NLP at Aspire Therapy Manchester
Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP is often referred to as ‘waking hypnosis’ and is a close relative of hypnotherapy. It helps you to increase confidence and overcome anxieties.
The techniques that NLP employs will motivate you, give you greater control over you own thoughts and feelings and enable you to set goals.
It is an interactive method which makes use of simple mental exercises that draw on the intuitive and imaginative parts of your brain and the physical resources of your body.
Methods might include simple forms of visualisation, calming techniques, affirmations and role-modelling.
Finding What Works For You With NLP
NLP exercises are undertaken with the therapist when you are in a light state of relaxation, not in the more deeply relaxed state associated with traditional hypnosis.
They draw on your in-built visual, auditory and kinaesthetic abilities to help you to deal with unwanted thoughts, feelings and emotions.
The interactive nature of this approach means that you can work closely with the therapist to discover exactly what works for you. Because of this is provides a useful supplement to the deeper forms of relaxation involved in hypnotherapy.
It also helps to give you a real understanding of the way you own mind works and of its relationship to your physical body – which is much closer than we tend to realise. Rather than relying on thought alone, it will help you to become aware of a range of other psychological and physiological resources which are available to you.
NLP and Self-Help
Another advantage of this approach is that it provides you with a set of self-help techniques which you can use yourself as part of your day to day life, helping you to deal with stressful situations and improve your confidence.
Just knowing you have some techniques you can draw upon when facing a stressful situation helps you to feel calmer and more confident. This makes NLP very useful for fear of public speaking, for example, or for dealing with feelings of panic, particularly those associated with phobias.
